Why would a man stay in a relationship when he always brought up the prospect of it ending?

He admitted that I'm a good woman. He asked why did I decide to stay with him and I'm such a good woman. He would always bring up it would be great if we stay together after a year of dating. Would say we'll both be okay if we never work out. We dated for 3 years I called it off. Now he's hurt by the breakup but he said those things. What was his problem?

Because he’s a shit bag that used “I’m going to leave you” as a way to direct and control the relationship when in reality that’s not what he actually wanted. Now that you made the move (he probably thought you never would) he feels some kind of way
