Why would a man who spoke about marriage change his mind?

Something has changed. Probably he has got new food to thought. A film, book, a friend and of course you might have provided a reason for a second thought. It could be anything. Without knowing much about him, we wouldn't be able to say what's it is exactly.

He said this in the first few months of dating and it was confusing for me. So 3 years and now I just decided to call it quits because we're going nowhere. Everything is just fun and nothing serious being built for the future. I told him if you don't want to marry me be honest but I don't feel like he is until I decided to break up

Lack of confidence. Some people also get freaked out about the possibility of going into the unknown.

He's wasting your time with "ifs, one day," etc. Him and more men nowadays want to keep you as another "forever girlfriend", in the eternal dating stage.
