Because it's a massive pain in the ass to work up the nerve to ask a woman out, only to have her shoot you down, shit all over your idea, or generally waste your time.

I prefer to have women express direct interest in me before I ask them out dates.

It's women today who have double standards with respect to adherence to traditional gender roles, so I always have fun calling women out on that hypocrisy. If you are more traditional in your views of gender roles for BOTH sexes, then I withdraw my original statement. :)
