I’d it okay to date a friends ex?

I feel like it’s always good to ask permission before dating a friends ex but what if you haven’t spoken to that friend in years? We never were super close friends but we both respect each other and would chat occasionally when we see each other but I live somewhere else now that’s far.

I met his ex when they were dating and I thought she was cool and that they seemed like a good fit together but I guess it didn’t work out. They dated for about two years and have been broken up for longer. Me and this girl would have friendly chats here and there, sometimes share music and podcasts but lately it’s turned into flirting and now I’m interested in seeing where it goes. I haven’t spoken to her in a couple weeks because I feel conflicted about what to do.

AS long as they have no relationship at all and it has been a year, he can get over it. It is none of his Business. If there is possibility that she broke up with him for you to try out then it better be a year UNLESS you want a "no more friend" dynamic.

If i was the friend i would love to be asked. Just as a sign of respect between friends. Because if it goes well between the two of you, i would potentially see that ex of mine more often because of you. So it's more about that then "ownership" over an ex.
