Is bad spelling a turn off for you?

I don't mind it too much, as long as I can understand what they wrote. Spelling doesn't necessarily mean a person is unintelligent or uneducated.

My wife herself (and me too to some extent) often spell wrong my language, although she expects me to write and speak perfect German lol.

No not at all.
I was raised with speaking one language (turkish) but had to learn german and English in 1st grade and so speaking mainly german and English at the same time since that.. I do a lot of mistakes, mainly grammatically and I also confuse a lot of words in those two languages.
Anyways here in Germany when I do one stupid grammatical mistake online, i get bashed by others who mainly just speak german and it's just so annoying! I hate talking to germans online, in real life they correct you occasionally or say nothing.

As for your question... not a turn off. BUT... it is a distraction. And, yes, the picture is accurate if not in a bed/sexual situation, then in others. Great example is a job application. Or a letter. Or so many pieces of writing.

Bad spelling isn't a turn off but it will make me question credibility and dedication, especially in an academic or professional setting,

Sentence structure is more important. You can always rearrange or swap letters if it's a misspelled.

Also I'm aware that languages have their own conjugation, sentence structure and even spellings. So for me spelling is like the least of my worries. Those who make absent minded judgements on spelling just come off as rude, and inconsiderate. Especially to those where English isn't their first language. To attack others for poor spelling also just gives others to grief you back if and when you should try to speak or write another language.

The idea and main concept should be to grasp what level another has learned a language over just spelling.

It irks me a bit, since I'm a grammar freak, but I have reason to believe Autocorrect strikes at bad times and lots of people don't catch it until after they send it.
