2.1K opinions shared on Dating topic. How many women use makeup, fake hair, filters, hold their camera from a high angle, and frame the picture so only their face is seen? I bet there are 500 of those for every bald guy with an old picture when he had hair.

Sometimes you have to hold the camera at a high angle just to combat the camera lense distorting face shape if your camera is shit, though the other stuff is inexcusable outside of covering up a temporary cut or zit or something. I bet in most cases women are also just assuming it's an older pic because he looks young.

@Malwi93 It's how lenses are measured. The smaller the number, the wider angle the lens is, but also the more barrel distortion ("fisheye effect") there is. Barrel distortion makes things in the center of the frame larger and things towards the edges of the frame smaller.
learnopencv.com/.../...al-distortions-1024x352.png![Why do men on dating apps continue to use pictures of themselves from their younger days when they had hair, but donāt have any hair now?]()
Notice the distortion of the heads of the two people on the outside edges of the picture? That's caused by barrel distortion. And in SpaceGnome's pictures, the really wide 24mm lens makes the girl's nose huge and her head shape weird. The longer the lens, the more natural and proportional she looks.
A longer lens (a larger mm measurement) means a narrower angle, and allows the camera to be further away from the subject, and this flattens the image and helps everything in the image be proportional - you'll have less distortion as you get to the edges of the frame.
But while holding the camera further away does reduce barrel distortion, holding the camera at a high angle does nothing for barrel distortion. What holding the camera high DOES do is stretches the skin of the neck (making it smoother) AND it tends to make the body look smaller because the face is much closer to the lens than the body is. In other words, it's a way to make the camera tell a lie, and that's exactly why most women use that technique - just as they use makeup, filters, hair extensions, and other fakery. - 1 y
@MrOracle I've seen holding it high up result in undistorting my own face back to the way it is in real life. The easiest way to tell is if you compare the photo to what it looks like in a mirror that isn't warped. You have to angle the phone's camera at a tilt while above and in front, until it matches whats in the mirror. The angle used is this / a bit away from the forehead enough to have the entire head and shoulders i the pic.
Though thinking about it, the best angle to match reality may differ based on the person's real face shape. My jaw is smaller in real life than it is in straight on photos with a low mm lens, so having the bottom of the camera titled farther back with the top closer and the camera held above, tends to fix that. - 1 y
@TheSpaceGnome You're wrong, but there's a reason you're wrong that you don't realize, and I know exactly what it is. When you're looking in a bathroom mirror, you are nearly always being illuminated from above, which means you have harsh shadows in your eye sockets and under your nose, and that looks unnatural. If you angle your camera up, you are also tilting your face up towards the light, and you're canceling most of the shadows. But a bathroom mirror is an unnatural situation, and doesn't reflect how you look in real life, under normal lighting conditions.

@Malwi93 No one said they didn't look great in the selfie - the problem is that they often don't look that way in real life. To a woman, the point of a selfie is to LIE - to try to look better than she actually does. To a man, the point of a selfie is to see what she ACTUALLY looks like, which is why men tend to hate selfies - we know they are nearly always manipulated.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGR23fy19Uo
In a close-up selfie, this girl looks cute and a little above average - but when you zoom out, you find out she's 300 pounds and needs to book 2 seats to fly. And, look, I'm a fat person myself, so I'm not hating on her, but if I were to use a dating app, I'd have pictures of myself that showed my whole body, because I'm not dumb enough to think that hiding my body is going to do me any favors. I assure you that THIS girl has zero body shots on her profiles - nothing but close-up selfies - because women are VERY comfortable with visual lies, especially of themselves. - 1 y
Actually I'm not wrong, you are.
When facing the camera straight, the lense distortion makes my head longer, and wider in the bottom than it actually is, this angle / corrects the distortion, reasteblishing the correct face shape by enlarging the top and shrinking the bottom to match reality.
The bathroom lighting isn't relevant, whether illuminated or not I don't see that sort of shadowing.
I'm "baby faced", so it all looks smooth even in very low light at whatever angle, and the camera also has a flash. Also the bathroom isn't where I take pictures, I have mirrors elsewhere in the house. - 1 y
This isn't me, but this shows a good example, straight on the camera looks like "square / triangle" one, but my actual face shape is more like the "oblong / rectangle" one. Holding it at that angle about a foot from my forehead fixes it back to normal. www.researchgate.net/.../...e-shape-categories.png
- 1 y
@TheSpaceGnome Well, yeah - no one said that your nose was supposed to be touching the screen when you were using the front camera. You DO need to have the camera back away from you some in order to reduce the barrel distortion - most front cameras have very wide-angle (i. e., short focal length) lenses which naturally have lots of barrel distortion. But you don't need to hold the camera high for this - just at arms length. If you hold it high, you are introducing perspective distortion, and while you might prefer that look, it's not how you ACTUALLY look.
- 1 y
Actually it is how I ACTUALLY look.
You do realize that height is still distance correct? the barrel distortion at the bottom is stronger on the lense because of how the lense sits in the camera.
I do photography on the regular, I know what I'm doing. - 1 y
Also, this disparity in dostortion is present with it a foot away from my face, not "touching my nose". You are grasping at straws at this point.
- 1 y
@TheSpaceGnome "the barrel distortion at the bottom is stronger on the lense because of how the lense sits in the camera."
If you are talking about the fact that the lens isn't centered on the back of the camera, sure, but that 2" of off-center isn't going to make any significant difference, and you can easily hold the lens level with the center of your face. If you hold the camera high, looking down, you are narrowing your jawline (from forced perspective, not from barrel distortion) and making your body look smaller. - 1 y
@Malwi93 "So whas the best way to take selfies"
It's to not take "selfies" - instead, either prop up the phone or get a cheap tripod and camera mount ($20-40) and use the back camera and the timer or a remote shutter button. That way, you can be further away from the camera, and you'll be using the longer lens and higher quality camera on the back. The front camera is really intended for video calls, and while they've improved them over the years, they're still too wide-angle to really take good "selfies".
Even better: get someone to snap the pics for you. - 1 y
"If you are talking about the fact that the lens isn't centered on the back of the camera, sure, but that 2" of off-center isn't going to make any significant difference"
I'm talking about the lense itself being slightly tilted in its socket, but I suppose what you said about it not being centered would effect it as well a bit.
"If you hold the camera high, looking down, you are narrowing your jawline"
My jaw line is significantly narrower in real life than on my camera, so thats kind of the point. The lense isn't flat like mirrors are, and because of that it warps shapes at the edges. In order to not need to hold it up high, I'd need to increase the distance its held significantly, and without a selfie stick or tripod setup, thats not possible.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 ymost girls are fat which is somewhat the same or possibly worse and they post photos with favoring angles and filters to slim down the face and angles that make them look less fat. c'mon it's to catch someone the reason they're on there so you have to try to impress somehow, MOST of the people on there are deceiving one way or another and in person will not be how they look on there, this mostly goes for girls you cannot deny that because girls use way more filters than men do and take more time to take photos, plus the make up alone is already a big help for many girls who look hideous without. Stop bashing or complaining when in general girls are the worse in this, the ones that actually look good in person too will not admit that they had some work done as most girls from today have some lip fillers, fake lashes and all the fat transfer, chin lips and surgieries that are now so common.. fakest of fakes calling out on bald guy trying to catch a date lol ridiculous.

2.1K opinions shared on Dating topic. same reason women use older pics, make-up, filters, stolen pics, fake hair/eye-lashes/boobs/botox, and probably some photo editing stuff. to get someone at least intially attracted to them. thing is, by the more common standards put upon guys for dating these days, if guys showed their real selves, zero would get a date as those who live up to today's standards rarely if ever use dating apps where as even the least attractive woman would still get a few guys inteterested no matter what she showed honestly.

10 Reply Guys in general don't tend to take a lot of photos of themselves. If they have one on hand, then they will probably use it rather than waste time taking another picture. Looks aren't all that important to most men. Women in contrast are narcissistic so they are constantly taking pictures of themselves and living delusions behind masks of all kinds of fake shit and filters because they can't stand to face reality. They live in a world of make believe and are obsess with superficial vanity.

Actually, it is worse with women. They will put pictures of themselves when they were all dressed up and makeup to the max for some event... Hair done and everything. +1 yThis seems to be pretty standard practice. I more hear from guys complaining that the women use pictures from 15 years and 20 pounds ago, lmao, but Iām sure itās a two-way street. People are probably trying to get their foot in the door and wow someone with their personality, and theyāre trying to draw more interest by misrepresenting themselves with old pictures. At the end of the day, itās sad, because people are clearly insecure about themselves.
00 Reply 1.3K opinions shared on Dating topic. I´d say because they want to show off the pictures they look best on. Some guys might think they look better with her and in their current state and don´t want to be viewed as unhealthy or are insecure about because they are losing their hair earlier than they expected.
