Why do women seem to get more serious with a man if he turns down physical advances?

Has happened to me twice.

both girls would tease me in a lighthearted manner. Then later they started to touch me, which i think is a sign that they were interested. In both scenarios i backed away because i felt awkward.

after that happened, both of those women stopped being immature and got more serious. No more joking or teasing. They shifted to being more serious, but they would still talk to me like they did before, just without the joking.

Remember in Superman 2 when Superman gave up his powers than Superman got his ass kicked by some guy in a diner? He needed to get his powers back after that and then he went and whooped that guys ass.

It's kind of like that. Women don't like it when the realize they're powers don't work. So rhey must double down until they prove to themselves they haven't lost them. In other words it's less about him and more about thier own ego.

Because women have a hard time with rejection. Its not normal for them to be told no
