I asked my boyfriend of 7 months did he have any kids because It was fathers day. It was a joke but he was not happy with me asking him that.

If you need to ask this question 7 months into the relationship, then your relationship is set to fail pretty soon. You are not communicating because if you did, you would have known this fact 7 months ago.

It is rude in my opinion to ask such a personal question knowing that this may cause tension.

What are you guys talking the entire day about? If you don't know him well enough and have to ask this kind of question after such a long time together, I wonder if you are just looking into each other's eyes and not communicate verbally.

If you felt the need to ask such a joke, then maybe your intuition or subconscious has some underlying concern / question. The fact that he wasn't happy you asking that only adds fuel to that potential fire.
