So this guy I know came and sat next to me and said ‘hey lanni!’ (We previously have got on well on a friends basis). I was reading so I paused and said ‘hey James’ without looking up. I then handed him the reading sheet we were focussing on and asked him how he was. He didn’t respond at all which took me a back. We then spent the remainder of the entire meeting both clearly uncomfortable.

worried now as don’t want to have seemed rude but worried I may have?

I wouldn't find it rude personally (that you didn't look up at him because you were doing something). Maybe ask him about it? If he is angry?

He's being a crybaby if he got mad about that. You were already doing something. I wouldn't want to stop in the middle of a page either lol
