So I get this a lot on this site that it's okay for an 18yo to see a person 25+ yo, since they are consenting and legal adults.

But the way I see it, they're still quite young and naive. Too young to understand age gap relationships. It's not about the law, I find these relationships icky because a person in their adulthood is practically seeking a teen. That's weird.

If you groom a kid before said age then there is a legal and moral problem. In much of the world’s society, 18 years old is that line in the sand. Adulthood has to start somewhere. People have to be criminally liable for actions as an adult at some age. People have to be able to vote at some age. People have to be able to sign contracts at some age so on and so forth… If you an adult you are free to make your own decisions and lead the life you want to lead. In most of the world that would be 18 years old. I’m laying it out logically for you. There is societal consensus on what people considered as an adult. A more compelling question might be, why are there so many "legal ages" for a variety of various activities, opportunities, legal transactions/entitlements, "rights", obligations, etc. The human brain typically does not fully mature until 23-25 in females and 24-26 in males, as was already mentioned by others. Someone may have to be 21 to enter into a binding contract, but in many states can start flying an airplane with an instructor at 14, and solo as young as 15! Drinking, smoking, driving, getting married, getting a job (either non-dangerous or dangerous), etc, ad nauseam, may each have a different age in a different state or municipality. But, since different areas and functions of the brain mature at different rates, I guess we're kinda stuck with this.

Psychologically these sort of relationships are simply predatory.

Many a time if the man & woman are in the same town it started before she was 18 and she was groomed into the relationship. It is not very uncommon to hear that a 25+ relationship started when the woman was 16, 15 or even for that matter 14 and only became "public knowledge" when legal and thus the guy wouldn't end up in jail.

The above comes for stats. Reality. What police, social services, and even medical see. From my great-grandfather about 31 male relatives - father, brothers, cousins, married into the family, etc. - have worked at state and federal level police organizations.

A man who is 25+ years old seeks out younger women because of the simple fact these females are young, naive, uneducated and thus solely dependant upon them.

Statistically these relationships are highly and continually ABUSIVE - sexually, mentally, physically - due to the simple fact - woman's inability to readily escape the situation.

WHAT does a man who is 25 years older than an 18 year old girl have in common. Nothing. They're in a completely different generation bracket - so different tastes in music, fashion, etc, etc.

There is NOTHING to relate on that makes for the foundation of a happy and healthy relationship between other people.

So WHY are they in a relationship?

Because she is naive, uneducated, and easily manipulated. How is that not predatory?

The man specifically targeted her because she would be solely dependant upon him. She doesn't have an education - she doesn't have a decent job history. Little to no means in which she can escape if - and they typically do - such men become abusive.
