Why leave single as your status on Facebook?

Is he a native English speaker? I live in Japan and the word "single" (Japanese 独身) here means "not married". Same in South Korea too. (I've been living outside an English environment so long that I sometimes confuse this too now.)
It may be the same in other countries too.
