u +1 y1. Is she really mentally ill or just making that claim so that she has an excuse for some other shortcomings in her accomplishments?
2. If she is mentally ill, there are a few different concerns. First, some types of mental illness have a strong genetic component, such as schizophrenia. If I am dating to find a future wife and mother to my children, I do not want someone who will have schizophrenic children.
3. If she is mentally ill, depending on the diagnosis, she may periodically require hospitalizations and long term inpatient care. That means she won't always be by my side.
4. If she is mentally ill, it will affect her ability to do many things in life. She may be unemployable. She may have difficulty participating in social activities. If she has children, her ability to be a good parent may be impaired.
5. Finally, her mental illness will most likely permeate her relationship with me. Will she be overly self-centered because she views herself as a victim? Will she be suspicious of my every movement?
Yes, mental illness in a partner should serve as a HUGE red flag for anyone who is seriously contemplating a long term relationship. However, if a guy is simply looking for a girl for a good time, and perhaps for uninhibited sex, SOME mentally ill women are uninhibited and quite promiscuous.

I mean maybe you can both figure it out
I have a theory about mental illness and it's very simple theory
But I think anything can be worked through and sometimes it takes that special person or even just a friend to communicate with you to open up new ideas new avenues things to look at when asking why is it happening to me
I say talk to him about it if he can't hang with you because of it then that's his problem and it's a good thing because that way you're not going to waste your time either
But I will say I believe honestly that you can beat this whatever it might be I believe you can beat this and become the person who you truly want to become10 Reply
+1 yThey could, but they could be just as turned off with a lack of communication too. let them know if you’re struggling, and if it’s the right person it won’t matter.

+1 ySort of. girlfriend 2 had one but, after she spent 6 months in the Ha Ha Hotel, I was still intent on staying with her when she got out but, she went back to er ex and I didn't see her again until at least a decade later.
At that point, she would only fall in love with me when she was having another breakdown. As soon as she got better, we were just best friends, again. While she was in, I was her husband, according to her!
After hearing stories about the shit she'd do before going back in, I no longer wanted her, romantically. One time, she had a bad case of diarrhea and shit her pants and then went to the kitchen, took off her shit-filled panties and swung them around in the kitchen throwing little globs of shit all over everything in the room!! You name it, there was shit on it!!
The last time I was with her before her 6-month stint, she got baby powder and sprayed it all over the living room, got a box of loose tea and syrup and built a mountain of tea on the kitchen table, which hardened and was next to impossible to get off, took a huge full box of blue tip matches and dumped them into a frying pan full of bacon grease and then took every dish in the kitchen and put them into a sink full of dirty water!! I spent all the next day cleaning the dishes and the kitchen! After all that, I was beat so, I decided to wait `til the next day to clean the powder in the living room. Shortly after I'd finished cleaning the kitchen, she went in and saw what I did and got really pissed at me for ruining her art work!! And then proceeded to start making that mess all over again!! I couldn't take it, anymore, and left!! I called up her father to come get her.00 Reply - 657 opinions shared on Dating topic.
+1 yAbsolutely. I've been with a woman with borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder. Another who was schizophrenic. Another who had epilepsy and now is a trans man (I think the epilepsy took its toll on her brain) and was eventually falsely accused and served an ex parte ppo by a girl with a panic disorder. So yeah mental health issues in girls/women are a HUGE turn off for me after all of those experiences and unfortunately majority of the women in my dating age range self diagnose themselves with these disorders and illnesses.

+1 yDepends entirely on the situation, but I would generally find that a turn off, yes. If you've just been struggling with mild Anxiety or a bout of Depression, that's really not a problem.
If you have PTSD, Borderline, Bipolar, Schizo, Paranoia, or anything else in that line; I'm sorry, but I just can't have you in my life.

+1 yMental health challenges can be a spectrum. If someone literally can’t remember what they said an hour ago or they can’t mentally add 2 + 2 then yes that’s frankly a turn off. However if someone just feels overwhelmed or is recovering from some trauma then connecting and trusting them seems more possible.

+1 yDid you really expect someone to come on here and be like "No, of course not, the more the merrier?" Of course it's a turnoff that's a silly question. The better question is "Is this a deal breaker?" which for some it will be and some it will not be, but nobody is going to honestly say "Oh it doesn't matter at all."

I wouldn't consider it a turn off. It's a personality characteristic like any other. You are either compatible or you are not.
- +1 y
@dudeinohio You can't say that, not knowing what the mental health problem is. That's just a virtue signaling answer. Violent psychosis is not "a personality characteristic like any other." OCD manifesting in having to check the lights and stove three times before leaving is.

Well... ok... ill give you that...

But I will say that you have a good chance at garnering true empathy though since you're female.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yDepends on how bad it is and whether or not she is self reliant.
I got severe ADHD myself but I have been 100% independent my entire adult life. I have a good job, bought my own house, take care of my own problems, etc.
But if the girl is looking for a man she can support her not only emotionally but financially this is a dealbreaker for me. It’s actually why I broke up with my last girlfriend who has this problem.

+1 yIt depends on the problem: if it's something like depression or anxiety it's not a big deal but if it's bipolar, borderline, OCD, schizophrenia, or psychopathy then it's a total deal-breaker.

I had a girl told me she has epilepsy and if I want to stop being friends I can stop. I told her nonsense, I love you however you are and expect you to not leave me when I have a disease years later
