I don't think it's quite what you mean, but it's a cute story, so screw it: years ago, I was out shopping one day, and happened to be wearing my black Stewart kilt. The black Stewart is a very striking tartan:

and it gets stares like you wouldn't believe.

On this particular day, however, I wasn't thinking about that, I was thinking about the book I was looking for, and was very focused on it- up until I hear a shocked gasp from behind me. I turn around, and there's a little girl, maybe four or five years old, looking up at me in unabashed wonder. Unaware that I'm looking at her, and totally overwhelmed by what she was seeing, she said "what a boodiful dress!".

Definitely one of my favorite compliments.

It's less what she says hun and more the meaning behind it. Guys are used to manipulative comments from women so generally if a woman goes out of her way to build us up it's because we know she has an ulterior motive. So don't concern yourself with what to say to a guy. Concern yourself with more from speaking from the heart.
