Emotionally, if women want a boyfriend because she wants to be protected and and feel cared, then what do guys want about having a girlfriend?

There's different levels to it. A guy obviously doesn't need a woman to protect him. He may think he needs a woman to feel "cared for" - a lot of guys were brainwashed into thinking they need that. But all guys also want sex. So at a minimum there's sexual attraction. Guys are more in tune with that usually.

After that attraction, if she has more to offer then he will consider taking her seriously. Most women today don't have the character traits that men respect so they won't take her seriously even if they pretend to. (Women do the same thing to men tho).

The next level up is a guy deciding you're wife material and wanting to marry you BUT I hear that is getting very, very rare these days.

Someone they can rely on to take their "load" when their minds won't let them think of anything else. At least at first. After that psychological codependency develop naturally and specific to each couple.
