The internet is filled with personal ads from both men and women, each seeking a mutually satisfying arrangement with the other. I agree with previous comments. Gold digger is a very specific term for someone who's primary focus is to acquire money and wealth - which was the result of someone else's hard work - simply by being arm candy and/or a sex toy for the wealthy person. There are both men and women out there who are like this, although you typically hear about women engaging in the activity. And I don't think the word should be rid of because it should be denigrating for those people who engage in this sort of behavior.

Now, is it fair that some people get thrown into the category because they're dating someone who's wealthy, despite the fact that they actually care about the person and maybe the wealth is secondary? These people also exist, and no, it's not fair that they're put into this category.

But, as it is for things that tend to fall on the "legal but immoral" spectrum of morality, there's no law against it, but there are words for it intended to (hopefully) make someone feel guilty for doing it, or self-conscious if they're seen as being that type of person. It's what society has done for ages. Probably since the dawn of time. We come up with words for the types of people who do something wrong, something morally unacceptable, even if what they're doing isn't against the law.
