As long as you make it clear from the start that you will not tolerate any feelings to be involved in the friendship, then yes, a platonic friendship between males and females is possible.

I have a lot of acquaintances of the opposite gender where I made it very clear that I will not allow any feelings to disturb this friendship and that would also include any innuendo, sexual talk, phrases with double meaning, swearing, cursing, sexting and flirting.

At the first sign of it, I would sever this friendship at once and it has happened a few times that I needed to take that step because those men could not adhere to their part of the deal.

Yes men and women can be friends. The difference between date and hanging out is the context itself. Do the two people hanging out have intentions to go any further than friendship? If both have intentions to go further then it's a date. If not then it's just friends hanging out.
