Man said he isn't ready for a relationship but acts off?

A few weeks back he said he doesn't want a relationship and he's super far away from ever being in one again (he has a very personal reason for it). Now recently we been going out a lot and the last time I ended up lying on his lap (it started off friendshippy) and it ended in really intense long eye contact and near enough could habe ended in a kiss but I refused and redirected the moment bc of what he mentioned a few weeks back. He then told me I am a really special fascinating person for him and he's never been this close this fast with someone and that something just feels 'right' and I agree. It does. He's not an asshole and really open about what he thinks usually. And we walked around holding hands the entire rest of the day and when I started playing with his hand / fingers he smiled so brightly at me. But there was no mention of his side of he'd be Willingen to change his view or if he's just tryna make me do some open relationship shit with him. 😭

I don't understand his behaviour at all. Thoughts? Should I be cautious?
