Is he taking it slow or not interested?

Hi everyone so I've been seeing a guy for month. I started liking him and after 1 month of dating he left for one month because of his job. Surprisingly he checked in everyday while he was away for work.

After he came back he left me on read and didn't check in for three days... I started getting anxious because I felt like he was pulling away. After three days I texted him to see if he was okay and he replied immediately with “I was going to text you, been working and procrastinating lol”. After that we ended up texting for one hour and he told me he was leaving again after two days for another three weeks (work + holiday) and that he wanted to see me. (He told me about his upcoming holiday but he needed to leave earlier than expected because of work). We went on a date before his trip and among other things he told me he likes when he hears from me and that he deleted the dating apps. He told me his work is going to slow down again next month (meaning no trips for a while) and that he looks forward to an event he's attending. He invited me to join such event and I agreed.

So I don't know what to say. It's confusing because since two weeks the texting pattern has changed: if I initiate the texting he replies most of the time immediately and sometimes we also have some fun and engaging conversations. But then he either drops out in the middle of the conversations and doesn't initiate if I don't, and maybe he doesn't check in for two days or so. I know he's got a very demanding job and sometimes he works long long hours, he also told me sometimes after a long day at work the last thing he wants it's staring at a smaller screen again. Also he never initiated physical contact but in one occasion he told me I looked pretty.

Maybe I'm just anxious and insecure or is he just not that interested?
