Because they finally realized all the "tear jerkers sob stories" are presented for political agenda so it is fake so ignore the sob story.

The only real empathy is for the "well being and security" of BOTH sides, not saying "Jews who are threatened by murder by arabs n muslims "deserve" anything." Then complain if not support palestine you are heartless. JUST MANIPULATION.

Societal design maybe? Too much indoor entertainment and not enough socializing leads to isolation and a higher degree of selfishness. In one of my rental buildings, only seven units, the people do not even know their neighbors names even though they've lived side by side for a decade or more.

In my life, people are generous, funny, engaging, and sweet. Only on the internet do I see a lot of heartlessness.

These days? If anything they are more considerate than ever. Violence in general is way down compared to say 100 years ago.
