Right off the bat, nobody should shut anyone down over anything. If they can't talk about something, there is something wrong with them. It reveals unresolved psychological problems, inability to communicate, and a refusal to be honest.
Shutting you down is overbearing and insulting. It's a "fuck you" attitude.
