Why do people stare at interracial relationships (I am black and my boyfriend is white)?

My parents, I and my boyfriend attended my graduation. Lots of people kept on staring at me and my boyfriend. Luckily me and my boyfriend did not realise this. Interracial couples were at the ceremony but black men and white women. My mum said to us in the car lots of people was staring at you both and my dad agreed. They gave them dirty looks as this rude.

My family accept him and his family accept me.

They think that whom another person chooses to date somehow affects them in some vague, undefined way, when in reality, it's none of their business.

People tend to look at pairings they find unusual. White guy-black girl is one of the rarest combinations in America, so it gets a lot of looks.

Whenever I've been with a black girl we'd get lots of looks too, especially from black guys. Nothing we can do about that.

Generally interracial couples have more issues with mental health, domestic violence, etc. Mentally unstable people act weird in public which draws attention to them. People always keep an eye on shady unstable people.

For example if you saw an Arab guy in a convenience store and he was sweaty, he was wearing a jacket in the middle of summer, he looked nervous, and you kept hearing a clicking sound coming from his hand that was in his pocket would you be like I'm out of here or would you be like oh what a wonderful person? People use information about their environment and the people in it to make judgement calls. They aren't always spot on, but people act in their self interest for personal preservation. Sure the Arab guy might be a mental retard that jogged to the convenience store in his ski jacket and he might click his mechanical pen to deal with his social anxiety, but he might also be some guy about to detonate a bomb in the store and kill everyone. Better safe than sorry.
