Is it normal for the woman to initiate a kiss on a date?

I'd say it's pretty normal.

When I was 16 in 1970, my first real girlfriend leaned in to initiate our first kiss. I was kind of shy.

Another girlfriend and my wife both initiated kisses after our first dates.
In 1990, when I walked the woman to her door after our date, she turned, looked up into my eyes, put her hands on top of my shoulders, rose on her tip toes, pressed her body gently against mine, and kissed my lips tenderly as I put my hands on her waist. On our next couple of dates, we made out like crazy and wound up living together for almost two years.
In 1994, when my future wife and I were standing at her car after our first date, she stepped forward, rose up on her tip toes, and kissed my lips tenderly.
In both cases, it was a sure sign that they wanted to keep seeing me.

All my girlfriends gave clear signals and I knew they wanted to be kissed.

I think it's better to be a gentleman and let the girl initiate rather than appearing to be too pushy or seeming aggressive at first. Not that I wasn't the one who initiated a light, tender kiss at times at the end of a first date.

Not only is it normal. It’s practically the norm.


You do have to flirt and be sweet and escalate the tension but eventually when it’s peaking a kiss is often initiated by both parties as a natural response

I wouldn't think so. Very natural if she feels affection for you. It might be done out of politeness even as a thank you for taking her out. It could be for encouragement; a physical demonstration that she has liking for you.

You don't mention anything on the nature of the kiss and that can vary a lot from a peck of the lips to tongues down each others throats.

I'll always remember this 1st date with this girl at an outdoor festival. We were sitting across from each other at a small table having a drink and chatting when she suddenly got up, walked up to me and ask 'Would you mind if I kissed you'. That girl was tiny so even sitting we were at a pretty even level. lol We ended up making out in broad daylight in the middle of a crowd without a care in the world. Fun times.

But yes multiple times I've had girls initial the 1st kiss.

If unsure I will ask first.. then go for it.. plus guys are usually easier in general. Like my second boyfriend I kissed him before we were actually dating I didn't ask that time but I was in his room so I was pretty sure he was cool with it LOL.

Permission doesn't always have to be verbal. You can move in close and pause to let her respond by either moving in to or moving away, for instance.
