A few weeks, long enough to get a basic understanding of each other. I hate it when people ask me out on a date really early in the talking stage, only to find during the date that we’re incompatible, it’s a waste of time, energy and money.

Cap it at two weeks. If you're chatting a few times within the week you know whether you like the person or not. Then just ask if they'd like to hang out. If they make excuses or something seems odd, it's time to move on.
