As far as we know there have always been more men born than women. So even if everyone paired up, and everyone does not, there would still be some lonely men. If you will, our own genetics create a male surplus.

As for the more recent spotlight phenomena? There is no doubt that the advent of popularized online dating hit many men's dating chances badly. If there's only some 10 guys around, at some point the supposedly kind guy might get a date and hit it off. With the current online dating culture, it is generally easy to find another "hot" guy who seems to check, while rarely all, many boxes.

Of course it is a twofold problem. Sure it is worse for most men but it is also creating a situation of increased competition among women. Which often leads to the notion that there are no/few good men around.

The problem is further escalated by the rather insane beauty standards of today. No, really. Roll time back 50-70 years and the "hot" people simple do not measure up. For women it is easy enough to just see how far fashion is pushing it. For men? I mean, look at the perfect physique of the 60s. Its basically just a guy with somewhat defined biceps and hints of abs. Compare that to the cut, starved, hollywood money-shirtless shot ideal of today.

As for me personally, I sort of thrive in that initial meeting phase and while I do not drop any jaws walking past people I look unique enough to get a second look and generally some interest along with it.

Lastly it is always important to remember that once you go from randomperson44 to personwithaname most of these things cease to matter and now being able to make someone laugh and being interesting is suddenly the holy grail. But if you never learn that and walk around thinking you need to match the top 0.01% to have a chance? Dating will seem brutal, kind of can be even if you do though.

Incels have always existed but in small numbers. The past few decades of social change have swelled thier numbers is all. And it's because dating which used to be open to them no longer is. It's just cause and effect, not a big deal.

Because some of these men are really unable to attract women due to a mix of bad luck and dealt bad hands. Sure some are lazy and don't try but that's not the case for all of them
