I am answering the second question from a scientific standpoint. Survival of the fittest, possibly? I had a class where we talked about what makes humans different from animals which is mainly innovation, language, and morals. Anyway, survival of the fittest is based upon how many offspring a female can produce, and she lives. Survival of the Fittest favors that generation. Of course, with any pregnancy, there are unfavorable factors like miscarriage or death. I am not a scientist, but this is food for thought.
