What does it mean if a boy finds out my number and texts me casually?

He always used to smile at me and look at me while I don't look at him and used to stare at me while talking to me, previously. But, from recently, he started looking away as soon as I look back at him. He used to see me up to down, top to bottom and look away as soon as I catch him looking at me. I wasn't sure and he recently found out my number through a mutual contact and sent me a casual text. I replied with respect. He seen the text and didn't send me more texts. He comes online very frequently and seems like he started the talk first and when I shown him positive signs, it seems like he's not keeping more efforts.

What are his thoughts? What does it mean when he texts me casually out of blue and didn't send any more messages after I replied him? Does he wants to keep in contact with me or is shy to continue the conversation with me?
