Why does catfishing work on dating apps to get matches?

I am consistently told and assured that all you need to get matches is to have a good personality. Swapping out my picture and name and leaving my profile netted me more matches in 1 day than I ever had in my life.

The conversations I had were me talking as normally, and the conversations went great. I never brought up meeting, however with most matches they asked me to meet up and I would then reject them by saying I think we're not a match, which led some to try harder and I ended up unmatching.

In theory I should never have gotten a match since I used a pic that wasn't me, that lie would be enough to disqualify me from matching. In practice that one lie made a world of difference. Why is this?
