Men look for leaders and idols even among their partners. We girls have disturbed perception about being a leader. For us being a leader among other girls means to control and to manipulate others, for men a leader is someone who decides always in best interest of a group. Even if the group is just a couple.

Of course appearance, psychological skills, humor and emotional intelligence matter. On the other hand being a pretty doll that just tells everyone words they want to hear isn't a strategy that arouses emotions inside a guy. He has to think subconsciously "If I was a woman I would be like her" You hear that on hand of compliments you get, "you're an amazon... you're a fighter... I wouldn't want you as my enemy.." might sound negative from girl's perspective but they aren't.

Everyone has a emotional little child inside them. To approach this oldest stage of personality in another human being, you have to be a little bit idealistic, ideally if the person thinks you're pragmatic but you have a weakness for the child inside them. Of course there is mature and parental state of someones personality but this is question in interpersonal transactions. However this is more stuff that could fit in few sentences.
