I think it really depends on what you mean by "calculating." I'll admit that I would be inclined to say..."I also wouldn't trust someone calculating." But that's because it has connotations of nafarious scheeming, and manipulating others to bring about desired ends.

But is that really what you mean by calculating? Could you use a different word in substitution?

What is an example of calculating?

It sounds like such an obviously bad thing for a person to be calculating... that nobody would want to date someone like that. It makes me think I'm misunderstanding what you mean.

Well calculating to me, means they are calculating how best to manipulate and not many want to be manipulated.

In reality, I suppose, when boy meets girl both are trying to manipulate each other to some degree. At least in terms of liking each other. But there is manipulate and Manipulate and I associate Manipulate with calculating.

I often use the term "transactional" rather than "calculating". Someone who is transactional won't give anything unless they know they will get as much or more in return. Fortunately these people tend to find each other. Of course, all relationships are transactional in a way -- we choose partners who add to our lives, but most of us don't keep score day by day.

Someone does not need to be calculating to betray your trust. In fact, someone calculating would likely be less prone to betrayal as they would consider the cost.
