Should I end things before they get too serious?

3 months ago I met this guy in one of my classes, When we first started talking we started texting for a few days then he ghosted for around a week. I was chill cause he was only a friend then he came back we spoke for a week and once again ghosted during the weekend. This behavior continued for the next month and eventually it became pure texting everyday. I will say we were both flaky in texting, but Once I truly realized my feelings for him I cut other guys off and I decided I was going to work up the courage to tell him which was very short lived because 3 days later he was going on a date with a girl he had just met so I decided not to even bother. A week later he ended up confessing and I did too. Since it is the summer it is harder to meet up, so we decided to meet up the following weekend, before meeting up I asked “is this a date” and he said yes. Now yesterday night we were talking on the phone which has become a nightly routine in the past week and I mentioned our date the past Sunday and he was like “Date? You thought that was a date?” Which confused me because he had stated so, and who cooks for someone, holds hands, cuddles and kisses on a normal hangout? I was just like “oh? I guess not” then I asked so when are you taking me on one which I feel like I shouldn’t have even had to do, and he was like “do I have to dress up? I hate doing that.” and I was like “idk you’re the one planning it” to which he was like “ugh give me a day to think.” But that whole interaction rubbed me the wrong way. He says he’s all in and only looking at me exclusively but that just seemed like he didn’t want to put in actual effort for a serious date. His actions show he is serious about me, he texts, calls, has taken me to meet his friends and family, but I know men who would have dropped down to their knees to take me on a date, and I haven’t dated anyone in almost 5 years so I don’t want to waste my time. Is wanting to end things because of this interaction valid?
