If a guy refuses to commit to a woman, is it because he thinks he can do better?

Really depends on the situation and what you mean by commit. Committing can mean marriage or ir can be just a official relationship. So depends how long someone’s been together…

But some people will waste someone’s time using them as a holdover and a backup plan if all else fails.

Not necessarily he might just need more time but there are limits to how long you should wait. If a guy isn't willing to commit to a serious relationship after you've been dating for a month or two than yes you're wasting your time. I'm not saying you have to be talking about marriage or even be remotely close to it but if you've dated for a month or 2 and you still haven't committed to a long term relationship it means the chemistry isn't there.

Usually a guy who won't commit thinks there is something wrong with you enough that he doesn't want to take the plunge. If a guy won't commit after 2 months drop him, and stop wasting your time.

"refuses" or isn't initiating a commitment? he may be playin it safe, lower commitment, less heartbreak, many men are like this, and they don't even be chasing other girls. just hanging with you is enough, but not having to transition too much mentally make it easier for them to cope if it doesn't work out, he's just going to wait until he is sure.

Nope! Is because we (Men) are Logical beings... We think before we act, specially for something Long Term... In "today's world", cheating seems the norm, so don't want to go down the path of "my own destruction"... Been there, done that!

I call bs on the logical “think before we act” thing on the mere basis of how many cheep thrills a guy will go for on average without a thought in his head about how badly he’ll need a medical clinic to clean himself up.

@DishLady No often times that was thoroughly thought out as well, not always but most of the time. The problem is when you're doing dangerous things for fun even when planned for things don't always go according to plan. No guy plays airsoft planning to loose an eye, goes hunting planning on getting shot or was planning to get a fly-fishing hook in his eye on a botched cast. Besides back when we were monkeys it was the men that were supposed to do the fighting. IN our society there really isn't a lot of opportunities for men to feel like warriors so they need to do risky stuff to supplement the lack of the thrill of battle! XD

What does "better"actually mean?
She could be a 10, but can handle money... or is a complete slob. So better would he to improve on those things but you may compromise the 10/10?

If one or both aren't committing, it might not be a good fit
Or, maybe they don't know each other well enough
