Yes! In fact, I did just that... sort of...

The date was Monday 20 AUG 1990.

I was very interested in this beautiful blonde who was 5 years younger than me. We both attended the same college, but I was going for a PhD and she had 1 more semester to get her BS.

She knew I liked her and, the night before, I took her and a guy friend of mine out to a diner. For time and space reasons, I have to leave a lot of fun details before this out. Anyway, in that diner conversation, I had mentioned having chef's salads at this bar/restaurant named Holmes and Watson in downtown Troy NY. I don't remember but I believe she liked chef's salads too.

Well, the next night (Monday the 20th), I knew she was working at the local Friendly's restaurant. I decided this was going to be the night where I'd have something akin to an actual date with her - just her and me. So, I waited in the parking lot until her shift ended. I saw her come out as I was standing by my truck and I called out to her "You feel like a chef salad?" She stopped dead and smiled (she had a great smile). She drove to her apartment and I followed her and went upstairs with her where I met her two roommates. She got changed SOOOO fast, it was unbelievable. So, now, instead of a girl in a Friendly's uniform, before me was a beautiful blonde in a leather jacket and jeans and a green top.

In my truck, I took her to Holmes and Watson. I got a chef salad. I don't remember what she got. And we talked and talked and talked in the outside atrium of the restaurant. The wait staff hinted they were about to close... (So, it's like 1 or 2 AM.) We were the last customers to leave. I drove her back to her place and we just talked more in my truck. We didn't want it to end... but it had to. She left and I waited until she was safely upstairs. I then began the very short trip to my apartment. I was stopped at the only stoplight between her place and mine. I did "the checklist" and I realized "OMG, I am in love with this girl." followed by "I have to tell her how I feel". I had invited her to go with me on Wednesday to a going-away party for a buddy of mine at another bar in Troy. She agreed.

When Wednesday hit, we went. Two other girls who I knew (and might have pursued a bit before) stared at us as we walked in. (We were among the last to join.) We also left early and I told her that I wanted to talk to her. So, we drove to Washington Park in Troy (a private park but luckily we could get in). As she walked to the entrance, I thanked for for helping me (this is part of the details I skipped) and that "I think I am falling in love with you." We sat in the park for a while after she held me tightly by the arm as I escorted her. That night, we became a couple.

Not two months later, I knew I wanted to marry her.

She ended it not quite 15 months later.

I never got over that heartbreak. I moved on, but much of me died inside once I realized there was no hope.

Yes, he told me he’s unreliable for transportation to and from work. He also told me he’s too busy and far and we won’t work the same shifts and I have to ensure I have a ride when working nights
