For the same reason it's hard to move on from a woman that really doesn't give a 💩 about you, only what you bring to her life. You allowed yourself to see him as something he wasn't now your brain believes it even though your long absent good sense is now telling you reality. To make matters worse, he's probably giving you just enough to stay hooked. Which only makes it harder to disconnect.
