I have learned through friends and also through minimal contact with others, that a lot of men, are chasing the idea of you and not you, when they first show interest in you, because it is through the process of chasing you, that they learn whether or not they actually want to be with you. If you respond before they are sure they want to be with you, they might feel pressured into a scenario they do not know they want, and that might make them shut down on you. I also heard this concept in a t. v. show but only learned it is true later.
