I knew a guy and we both liked each other but it was inappropriate to act on it at the time, although we’re both adults. Recently I was looking on my dating app list of likes and he was one of the guys who’d ’liked;’ my profile. Is he trying to express interest and ask if I return that interest in such a way that won’t come back and bite him on the arse? Or is it common for guys that know you personally to ‘like;’ or swipe yes on your dating profile, like saying a general, friendly ‘hi?’

I doubt any guy would like on a dating app if there were no interest at all. It sends a certain message and I don't see why anyone would risk that just "to be friendly".
What do you mean it was inappropriate to act on it at the time?
He was a teacher at a school I was on a work placement at and he’s still a teacher there and I’m still a student.
So you're not really 37?
Obviously neither of us can do anything yet; but should I take it as a sign of encouragement, for after I finish my course and I’m no longer a student, which removes the conflict of interest?
I am really 37.
I’m a mature age community college student.
I think that's the whole point of it, so yeah...
Dunno, I never found a friend on a dating app. You should ask him what he's about.
It could be an invite to start a conversation.
