I feel like a part of me has died after my breakup. It’s sad I never knew a relationship could cause this much hurt

I don't think you can state that a part of you dies with a breakup. It certainly must feels like a deep sorrow if you loved that person for a long time. If that breakup was after just a few days or weeks or relationship, then people tend to be quickly over that breakup.

It is quite a difference between a long term separation (like 30+ years) and a short time relationship breakup.

I can imagine that those that have been together for a lifelong feel a different kind of emotion than those with a short term relationship (less than 1 year).

However, saying that part of you dies is exaggerated. As long as you are not physically dead, you cannot really speak about death. A breakup may leave a void or an emotional stress but not death.

I think each relationship and breakup changes you a little bit, and in some instances a lot. But they’re all lessons, life didn’t start and won’t end with them.
