You can't just decide to be successful, everyone wants to be successful,99•99% of us have shity misseriable lives, you think "not me, I'm special, I'm going to graduate, then I'll get a cool job in an air conditioned office and I'll have a flash car and live in a big house with a nanny to look after the kids so I don't have to waste my free time. Not going to happen, you'll get a worthless degree, wind up working in Walmart for minimum wage, you're husband will be fat and ugly, you're kids'll keep getting busted for shop lifting...
.., your daughter will get pregnant at 14, you'll loose your job and end up living in your car, your dog will die, your husband will shag your sister and then the finance company will reposes your car and you'll be sleeping on the street, we have no controls over our lives, shit just happens, unless your parents are rich you're better off not being born in the first place, give up all hope of ever finding happiness, the less you expect from life the less disappointed you'll be when it all turns to shit.
I didn't say a successful life.
I said a successful day.
Also, you can be happy without materialistic things.
Starting the day, for me, involves nurturing the self physically and mentally. Aside from doing my routines, I set my mind to a direction and clear negative thoughts like pulling weeds out of my garden.
