Is "dehorse" a word?

I've heard it used. A riot police office is sitting upon a horse.

A protester jumps up and completely pulls the office off the horse and onto the ground. He has been dehorsed.

Did i make this up? I feel the phrase comes from joisting.

Not sure if it's a word. I know dismount is if they were to get off intentionally, but in that context I'm not sure

Unhorsed would be the proper word, I think. De-horsing is the act of a car seller allowing a customer a test drive.

I would argue that even if it wasn't during a battle or a tourney, unhorsed would still be the proper word for it, as the action is not voluntary, so something like dismounting is out. Besides I think that unhorsed is the word they would have used when jousting.

Taking a person off a horse who isn't even involved in the conflict may be called dehorsing. .

In battle yes, I a cop ina horse is minding his own business taking a pee break and not in battle... you didn't unseat him or unhorse him you dehorsed him. in my opinion.

Like someone said, language is fluid. So yes, it could become dehorsed. For now, however, the proper word is unhorsed.

Nothing is proper in Texas. The phrase on the citation was dehorse.

Hmmm very good point. Deplane is orderly. As should dehorse be. That gives traction to unhorse but the thing is, in a riot, the word is dehorse or unhorse depending on the bad vocal of your southern district.

I just remember hearing that a student dehorsed a cop spoken by a policeman. It was very scary.

Guess the right word in the situation would be "pulled him off his horse" but I don't think English vocabulary was running through the guys head in that situation.

Dismount is intended. Dehorse or unhorse are the only correct terms for throwing a police officer from his horse.
