Etiquette question: Is 'seat-saving" in university lectures acceptable?

Uni has started again and I went to a lecture in a big, crowded theatre. As I was walking down the steps scanning for a vacant seat, I saw one. As I was about to sit down the girl sitting beside it stopped me and said it was "saved for her friend" (reserved for friend) who wasn't there yet.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing and paused for a second. Is this primary school or university? I ignored what she said and sat down.

I just thought it was incredibly childish.

What are your thoughts on the issue?

is seat-saving in uni acceptable or not?
was that a dick-move on my part?

I've never actually had this happen to me and i'm in my 3rd year of uni.

I think the issue is you not getting there early to make sure you get your own seat before it's crowded.
If I got asked to find another seat, that's fine, i'm not going to be mad, make a scene or anything, they want their friend to sit next to them, so be it. Not a big deal to find a different seat, and I think it's childish if you get mad/emotional over something as small as that.

I’m included to let friends sit next to each other to be honest. No point making a statement over something like that.

Depends on how crowded the lecture hall is. If it's too crowded, then it's just wrong. Whoever comes first should get the seat.
I mean, I know some people who tell their friends to save seats and then show up sinfully late. As a result, those who came on time don't get seat, which I think is very wrong.

If it's not crowded yet, and people are not hunting for seats, then I don't see a problem with saving a seat for the friend you study with. But if seats were scarce, then, you can't save seats anymore.

Well... i think it's a grey area. Neither right nor wrong. If the place is crowded and the lector has already begun the lecture then by all means ignore the ordeal and sit down. But if not then I don't see the problem in you searching for a vakant seat if you have the time.

I'm a hypocrite. If I saved a seat I'd just tell you "Oh actually someone was sitting there and got up to use the bathroom."

If you told me you were saving a seat for someone who wasn't there yet, and the lecture hall was crowded AF I'd consider it (look around for a second) and if I didn't see a reasonable option I'd say "Sucks to suck" and sit anyway.

Nah. I haven’t heard of saving seats since high school. In college, everyone just gets the next available spot so it’s first come first serve. Hell I would’ve sat down too. An hour and some change from each other won’t hurt them🤷🏾‍♀️.
