How do college professors make sure students don't cheat?

Nowadays, a student can easily look up answers online. Sometimes I Google one question, and the entire test or quiz pops up on Quizlet. It's too easy at that point. Even with an app called Lockdown Browser, where you can't open a new tab, you can take the test on your laptop and search for answers on your phone. The teacher will have no clue. And what about hiring someone from a essay-writing website to do your paper? There's so many ways to cheat.

I don't know, but testing to become a teacher has to be done in person with no personal items at all. Not even your car keys, a watch, or anything is allowed in the room. Pockets are even turned inside out and there is a video/audio recording of you while taking the test and screen capture of the computer screen the tests are on.

I don't know about general college classes though.

My college has that, too. Proctored exams, where the admin can view and control your computer screen at all times and no personal belongings are allowed inside the testing room. But there are only about 3 proctored tests throughout the semester, and the majority can be taken at home with no webcam or screen capture required, making it easy to cheat.

One strategy some of the professors did was they would make you memorize minority views on a topic as fact rather than the general consensus that most accepted as fact. That way if your views were standard, they would know you did not read the textbook.
