Was this professor's way of handling cheaters funny?

He caught two students cheating before (both different cases) but he had a unique way of confronting the situation. He didn't spent his time walking around the classroom during exams; he expected they were already adults that should know better.

First case:

From his desk, he caught from a distance two students blatantly coping from each other. He still let them finish the exam. He didn't announce the cheaters at that moment; didn't want to disrupt the class. He graded their exams (with a red pen) a 0 and made a ''BLATANT CHEATING. SO OBVIOUS. NICE TRY BUT IT LACKS CREATIVITY'' comment. Then he failed them in the class. They both had to retake the course.

Second case:

A student turned in his research paper but it was someone else's research that had already been graded last semester with a perfect A. The comment was an ''Great research. It's a perfect A but it has been graded last semester. Your perfect score has been divided by 2. You scored a 50%. Nice try though.'' He gave him a 50% on both the research and grade on the class. He had to retake the course.

He made the student at first believe they had gotten away with it but they didn. That professor wasn't dumb.
He once explained the way he graded plagiarized paperwork. He grades them by both the original grade and the student's grade of 0 for cheating... divides that by 2 and gives whatever grade that is.
