Why does she do nothing in class and complain that she doesn't understand?

There's a girl who sits near me in my college class who doesn't do anything except use her phone or sleep, when the professor is lecturing. Then when it's time to take a quiz in class, she's always the first one to complain that she "doesn't remember a single thing taught and the prof is throwing too much work at us."

Sounds to me like a negative cycle.

Does not understand. Following becomes more difficult. Interest drops. Feels pointless. Lack of trying leads to not understanding, leads to lower motivation. If you lack the relevant knowledge to make sense of a presentation this is exactly what I would expect.

Her conplaining at the quiz parts is Good! It means she has not given up completely and still wants to understand things. I get how it is not fun for you or the professor but realistically she is missing some prior knowledge on the subject.
