What is more your cup of tea: working for someone else or having your own business?

So I'm employed and therefore I do work for others right now but I honestly can't stand it.
I hate being told what to do, I hate investing my time, plus not even getting paid enough.
I honestly don't even give my best, probably like 60% of effort... the bare minimum, I still get the stuff done and on time but I could definitely do way better.

I'm trying to slowly built my own thing but until that is enough to pay my rent, bills and life, I do have to stay employed tho
Being employed brings you some kind of stability... I mean it's reality and money does not grow on trees lol

I prefer employment with a decent salary and great benefits. It provides a stable income and work hours.

Being self employed, you also have to be a business person. You're on the clock, at least thinking about your business, 24/7. You have to pay for your own benefits and you're income isn't guaranteed.

I worked for a great company for 30 years. I mostly worked in the field and, when I did, my time was my own as long as I finished my work. Got a free, expense-paid car every 100,000 miles (2 years) or so. I had great medical, dental and eye insurance. The company matched up to 6% of the money I put into my 401(k). I had paid vacation, 10 holidays, and sick leave. My vacation time accumulated every minute at a rate of a month a year, and I could accumulate up to 5 weeks without it being suspended. I also got a pension when retired.
There aren't many employers like that anymore.

My wife is self employed as a cosmetologist/hair stylist. She likes it and has been renting her own private room at a salon for years. So it's a good gig.
I know many other self employed people who do really well.

Employment can suck, depending on your job and your employer. But self employment can be rough. So it depends on your skill set.

Yes, that IS a "catch-22".
The good thing about being your own boss is that you ARE your own boss.
The bad thing about being your own boss is that YOU are your OWN boss.

You have to balance the possibility of unhindered growth, with the extra effort required to get it, keep it, and make money with it. When I taught a "Business Model for Massage Therapists" course in college, the money came out reasonably equal: less pay when you are employed but less responsibility, more money but more responsibility when it's "only you". And don't forget to save money for a vacation - - - - good luck.

I mean, at the end of the day we all have to report to someone. Its just the way in which you would that drives people to go in either the self employed route or employee route. With that said, for me, I would not mind working someone else if it did not always come with the caveat of having shitty uppermanagement that act like children on a powertrip and gremlin coworkers that like to throw people under the bus for any slight chances in receiving a pat on the head or fed a friggin cookie. I sound bitter as hell phahaha!

I'm a little stumped in answering this as my husband has a very successful architectural practice, whilst I still thoroughly enjoy my own profession as a forensic scientist working for the police authority. 🤔

I honestly don’t know how to vote on this. But I can tell you that I wish I’d been able to start my own business when I was young. I had ideas and dreams and… nobody believed in me. So I drifted from job to job for a lot of years and now feel empty and unfulfilled.
so… on second thought… I’m going back abs adding to the encouragement to try to strike out on your own. At least you will have tried.

I'd rather work in corporate America, at least for now.

The better companies have nice perks and really comprehensive benefit packages. As a struggling business owner, I would never be able to prioritize my 401k because I'd be so stressed making ends meet and investing into business growth.

I don't have an amazing idea or a super niche skill set. I like being able to clock off at days end and knowing that my worth is not tied to my productivity after 6pm.

I had two regular jobs before I gave up and started freelancing on my own terms at the age of 23.
I hate workplace relationships and management structure, by far the most toxic crap I had to deal with in my life.
Ain't nobody gonna get me back to regular employment.

My first job out of college I worked for a small business with about 10-12 people, including the couple that owned it. It was a lot of stress on them, but they made good money too. Had their housekeeper on the payroll, and their daughter even though she only worked summers while on break from college.

I was self employed for years. I was a part time nanny I didn't live with the family. I prefer being my own boss. I work at a gas station now, I'm lucky I have a great boss

You can still work as an employee and have creativity. That's what I prefer. I am an employee but still have my own creative input. I don't want to handle the whole business I have to deal with crap that doesn't interest me at that point.
