So if you start everything you say with the word, "so", why do you do that?

So about 10 years ago, NOBODY started every sentence with the word, "so" unless it was followed by a comma and the use of the word was actually needed and meant something. Here's an example of what I'm talking about.
(before) Q: What's your dog's name? A: My dog's name is, Fido.
(today) Q: What's your dog's name? A: So my dog's name is, Fido.
There's No NEED for you to add the word, "so" to everything you say! (Yeah, I know I did it twice, already. I was making fun of the people that do that stupid shit!)
The first time I ever heard it was about 10 years ago when some girl from, the middle-east was being interviewed on t. v. because she'd been shot in the head and survived it. Other than starting every sentence with the word, "so", she spoke very good English. I gave her the benefit of the doubt because English is probably not her native language and, she'd been shot in the head and using "so" like that might've been a side effect! Next thing I know, EVERYBODY'S doing it!! WHY? Other than making you sound really stupid, what does it do for you?
The ones that start most sentences with, "I mean" are no better. "I mean" should only be used at the start of a sentence if you've just tried to explain something to someone and you just want to make it a little clearer as to what you were just trying to say. Example:
(before) (statement) I really like your new car! (response) It's a really nice car!
(today) (statement) I really like your new car! (response) I mean, it's a really nice car!
There's no point in adding that to everything you say!
So if you start everything you say with the word, "so", why do you do that?
