Resigned without new job offer. How do I explain this in interviews?

I'm offering my resignation to my manager this afternoon. I was going to get terminated if I didn't. I was also already looking and applying for new jobs though, but I haven't even gotten any interviews. How do I explain this in an interview?

Also, my manager and I talked a few weeks ago. It was going to be time to "move up or move out" sometime, as my position will be either eliminated or reduced.

I was offered and accepted a new job this morning (had the interview last week). So moot point, I guess? Thank you all for your input.

You don’t. Job interviews are a two way street, so if you’re being asked why you resigned without a new job offer, ask your interviewer why they find themselves in need of new employees. Interviews are a two way street and you don’t owe explanations to employers if what they’re asking is irrelevant to the job you’re applying for.

Then just say you felt it was time to leave to find another job. Did you give proper notice?

Just say it was time to move on. Your current boss might just say you worked there and nothing else.

You might as well be honest with your next interviewers - your old company forced you out. If you need a story: Sabbatical, longer dream vacation, taking care of your health, taking care of an elderly family member...
