Some people really like to inflict their kids on everyone around them. This is why my favorite restaurants are bars with a age of 21 to enter, no kids.
Of course you're not an ass. You were there to work and not entertain a disrespectful child whose mother was not supervising. I'm too much of a softie to ignore the kid but you have the right to ignore the child.
You’re paid for working and the kid was just disturbing. It was up to his mother to scold him and to educate him to leave you two alone, so she was wrong having an attitude, you did the right thing.
I would have told her to straighten his behavior and have a talk with him or just ignore the kid it makes you sick that people got kids who are not well-behaved

No you were not being an ass cause kids will do things to push your buttons. They’ll try to be sneaky about it like you’re not paying attention to what they’re doing. I can say a whole lot about the kids that I have to deal with
She was irresponsible bringing a child to the workplace. Most workplaces prohibit it.
