I am asking this question because I struggle to understand why staying in my hometown is a bad thing. Holding everything else, I'd rather stay in Silicon Valley than experience growth from leaving my hometown.

This is one the examples of herd mentality. Everyone buys Gucci, iPhone, becomes doctor or lawyer, etc.
People want you to do what everyone else is doing : forget about your own identity, values and join the rat race.
As long as you're financially stable, I don't see the reason why others should dictate how and where you choose to live.
If you like where you live and you want to stay there, there is nothing wrong with that. Especially Silicon Valley. It is not like you are staying in a small remote town with no opportunity.
Where you live would be a great place if you are interested in a "tech" career, I would imagine. However I hear living expenses are pretty high there.
It's not a bad thing if it makes you happy. It just doesn't usually make people happy.
