Nearly all of us work, unless we are retired or independently wealthy. What other benefits aside from a paycheck, do you and perhaps even society/the world receive from you doing your job?

m +1 yabsolutely, yes...
I never really talk much about the details... but I do like what I do, for certain reasons that is not, money
I have a small business, which was a venture I started apart from the family (and relatives) business but still the same field, and although managing was never in my plans I did like it first as a challenge, and I had the chance to take on it as a responsibility... and there is also some flexibility in working hours, and well, the fact that if done well, it can work very well to provide for your needs and those of others in your life
there's one thing I do value a lot, and much more now after the pandemia, and it is something my father told me about many years ago, and that is the "true value of work and working" for others, but not just yourself, he told me about being a boss and/or an owner is not about owning or bossing people around and not to see them as "my employees" but as my coworkers my associates and the importance of working FOR them as much, or more they will be working with me
so the people that work for me are a very select group, because of the nature of the things we do, an 'absolute" trust and confidence are a most, it is even more important than being actually good at the job, lol... skills can be trained, confidence and trust are very difficult to bring up if they were not there in the first place, so yes, before the pandemia I did ask a lot from them and I made it worth for them and it paid off for everyone, business was going great, way better than we initially thought, so much that it didn't feel much like a job, lol... but that was something my parents also told me about, one thing my mother said (and my greatgrandma said as well) was to LEARN how to do everything you ask others to do for you, business wise, this is a VERY important thing, if you want to lead, if you want to ask, if you want to show others how to do something right or better, then you better know how to do it yourself... lol
then the pandemia struck, and everything went down hill really quick, as with many other business, profits stopped completely, and decisions had to be made, and now it was all on me, do I close the business and save all we earned, do i pause the business and risk everything we built, or do I wait and find other ways to keep it a float, all these options had the implication of let my coworkers go, and find something else... after many considerations I made and thoroughly thought through throughout the weeks, I did consult with my parents about it, spoke about it a bit, they were aware of all the logistics and that... so it all came down to one factor and that was providing, my parents said something I already knew, because they also knew this was one of my main worries
my coworkers were the providers for their families, especially their young children, and before the pandemia they did all of the hard hard work so I could provide for myself and mine, all of those profits and benefits we had, was because of their very hard and HONEST work, so now it was my turn... during the two years or so of the pandemia, I didn't earn much or at all, not in profits anyway, we fueled in all profits to keep the business afloat and barely, lol... but it was all worth, because we didn't have to fire anybody, we didn't have to let go anybody, and I worked all those extra hours and did all that extra work so they could provide for their families and they did not have a worry with their children during the pandemia which was stupidly difficult, lol
many times it felt like sacrifice, but it was not a sacrifice... it was just hard work through the rough times, so yes, something I heard about all my life, I got to experience it in real... hard work pays off, and hard work implies challenge and reward, and then you have business... do value the work of others as much as you value yours, because you will hardly or never go long without others being there for you, so yes... these things have made me very happy and fortunate, within a job I always told my parents when I was way younger "business is not for me, lol"
anyway, life lessons, lessons learned... real experience, it makes me the person I am, and it makes me happy as well, so of course I do value that lot
money? money will always come and go, that will never change...23 Reply- +1 y

+1 yI have real knowledge, skill and experience with tremendous value. It’s widely undervalued by most people, especially the people and organizations responsible for my pay, naturally. If everyone like me just refused to do their job for a couple months nearly everything we take for granted in the modern world would go away, civilization would collapse, and people would die at exponentially higher rates than typical. Every other critical trade and field, like medical and law enforcement, would become all but useless. Yet, people like me are almost never the highest paid person in any given room. Ell oh ell! Go figure. Don’t get me wrong, i make a fair living. But i’m paid nowhere near what i’m worth to the world we’ve made and the innumerable people who take it all for granted.

+1 yI actually enjoy my job! The paycheck is just a nice bonus.
For starters, it's a State job, so I have practically every holiday off.
In addition, I actually like my boss-
Yeah, not many people can say that, lol. She will tell me to do something and guess what-
She trusts me to get it done. No micromanaging or nagging. And I do it too: in a timely manner. If more management trusted their staff and made them accountable for their actions, that really makes a big difference.
And they respect my input and make sure I have the resources I need to do my job.
And best of all, she brings her dogs to work as stress relief/therapy for us!
Now as a disclaimer, my job is FAR from perfect!
My boss is the head physician over the residency program here, so she tends to be stressed out fairly often.
But I've also learned this much: if the boss is happy, I'm happy.
If that means occasionally fetching her a snack when she's moody? I will! 😆10 Reply
+1 yyes!!! it’s something I’ve dreamed of ever since I was a tiny brat… it’s actually one of the two things I’ve always wanted to become… and I genuinely enjoyed all of my classes so far as well. and the other thing, well… that one will be for the future…😌

+1 yI love my job. I'm a licensed electrician. I own my business. I love what I do and the majority of my customers. Hearing how happy my customers are when I either fix an electrical issue they've had or installing new equipment that they wanted makes me happy. Them being so satisfied with my work that they refer me to friends and family really brightens my day.

Great trade! We value our self employed Electrcian 😊

It's a shame trade workers are a dying breed. The younger generation are going to college and getting degrees that put them in debt for years. Nobody is going to trade schools and learning any of the building trades like plumbing, electrical, carpentry or hvac.

We are very aware. We have three children, and we will certainly not shy away from them wanting to learn a trade. Very good money can be made. In addition to supporting them now, we have saved a significant amount for each towards college (can't hurt)

That's good
I make a very good salary, but that aside, I honestly love what I do, and I'd probably pay them to let me do this job. I worked and studied very hard to get where I'm at, and being in a basically male dominated field, I'm very proud of that. So yes, for me it's more about the job than the money.
10 ReplyYes, although I've ended up doing what I said for years I would never do, I value what I do. I provide a service to people in need, as well as employment with living wages and benefits to an outstanding group of people. I have a genuine love for people in general, and since I now own the business (es) it allows me to employ my altruistic nature, my business education, networking skills, and problem-solving skills.

+1 yIf I was purely focused on a paycheck, I’d go into finance or something. I prefer a job that I feel I make a bigger difference than padding other peoples pockets.
no shade to anyone who does that tho. The economy needs to be healthy for everyone’s sake
10 ReplyThe way I see it, a job is interesting for 2 reasons. Either you like the job you're doing, or it pays well.
One of those 2 conditions has to be met to keep doing that job. If you have both, it's perfect. If you don't have any, then you have no reason to stay there.
20 Reply807 opinions shared on Education & Career topic. I'm a game developer, games are such brilliant forms of entertainment that transcend movies, books and even the most captivating story tellers, because this time, you are in control. We give you the tools to write your own stories and create your own memories. Creating such an experience for millions of others to enjoy is such a fulfulling idea to me. The trailer for the last piece I made, as the single programmer on the feature, received 2.3 million views on youtube alone.. If I can give just a single person a reason to get up from bed on a dark morning by just giving them something entertaining to play with, then it's all been worth it.
00 ReplyI like what I do but if I wasn't earning a living wage I wouldn't be doing it.
I'm outside all day 👍🏻
In every kind of weather 👎🏻
I keep people safe 👍🏻
I've learned that people suck and most shouldn't be driving 👎🏻
00 ReplyYes, absolutely. It's literally what I want to do as opposed to what I have to do. I can do it all day, and have, and enjoy every second of it.
I always try to improve, not just because it will help me professionally but because I just want to see the improvement for myself.
00 ReplyGood question. I suppose to some extent I do, even if my job can be complex or annoying sometimes, and I don't really like the workplace culture either. But I do value what I learn in the job, and it is a job where you can grow and they don't have a problem with training you for other opportunities.

+1 yI used to, but I am going to get a higher education so that I am being paid more.. I feel like being a CNA/MA any of those aren't worth it because you do so much and you don't get paid enough.. I think the people who are happy with their salaries and they're able to get by and still have money to put back or blow off, they're extremely rare and lucky. LOL

+1 yYou are always so inquisitive 😊
My job makes my brain work hard by challenging my critical thinking skills, forcing myself to be creative, and developing management tactics. I think that’s healthy as long as there is a balance to it and your brain has time to relax during the day too. My job makes society safer because our devices become safer when we correct our issues, so patients can get the treatment they need and not need multiple procedures to solve a problem.10 Reply- 1.1K opinions shared on Education & Career topic.
+1 yOf course. I've been fortunate to have a career that helps people. Over my career in the rail transit industry, I've helped build and maintain systems that allow millions of people to get safely between home and work or school. That's the satisfying part of my job.
Sure, the money is nice, but to see peoples' faces when they ride that train... in safety... it's priceless.
00 Reply 3.5K opinions shared on Education & Career topic. Before covid I was teaching computer science at a college. The pay was not great but I really enjoyed it and wanted to stay until I retired. Covid screwed it all up so I took a job as a systems administrator. The money is good but my heart really is not in it anymore. It is a good job and I was lucky to get it but I am just in for the money.
