Do you think short staffing is by design at most companies?

Like do you think companies stay short-staffed on purpose, or is it because employees legitimately have issues? I just exited the restaurant industry last week which is an industry that is very short-staffed constantly.

I don't think it's companies. I think it's a combination of people not wanting to work (due to getting government hand outs or other reason) and older generations leaving work faster that they can have people to fill jobs. I know here places that are short staffed are begging and doing anything they can to draw people to work and it's not helping.

I exited not because I don't want to work, but rather it was just exhausting me mentally

as someone with a small business, although not in the dining industry... I can assure you that being short-staffed is an absolute nightmare and also quite the detriment to the business itself

so no, it would not be something that I would ever do on purpose, and that is because of very obvious reasons, it just hurts the business and really badly as well

They are short-staffed because they won't pay a wage sufficient to attract the workers they need. Perhaps their margins are so slim that they can't. But, here in Seattle, Dick's Hamburgers pays $18/hour plus benefits and is able to sell their product at a very reasonable price.
