Does the company you work for really need the amount of employees it has at this moment?

I was watching a video by Logically Answered YouTube channel. He said that despite Twitter firing about 6500 employees, the platform is functioning as usual, save for some outings, and has even managed to get some new features.

So it creates the question of the nature of work the surplus employees were doing in the company. I mean, if a company is able to sustain itself with just 1300 employees, why did they need the amount of employees earlier?

Anybody working in software knows that even a small team is capable of building amazing products. That is just how some of the world famous software debuted in the market.

This also follows the pattern of mass hiring and then mass firing and on and on. Just how bad the HR management must be if they overestimate the labour force required. And not once, but again and again.

So? What is your opinion?
